How often should you have your carpet cleaned?  The short answer, it depends on many factors. What are you using it for?  What volume of foot traffic does it receive?  What type of carpet do you have? Are you a daycare facility?  Do you smoke?  Do you own a pet?  Do you have children?  These are all questions I would ask before suggesting a carpet maintenance program that would fit your needs.  But let me just say that I doubt you are currently having your carpet cleaned as often as it’s needed. Think about all the dirt, lint, dust, food particles, mold, allergens, bacteria, skin cells and grime that you bring in on a daily basis. Vacuuming will remove the surface level stuff, but much of what we bring becomes matted into our carpet, especially if we aren’t vacuuming daily.

Think of your carpet as a giant air filter, which is a good thing, because it traps all of those free floating contaminants into its many fibers.  But like any other filter, your carpet becomes saturated making it ineffective over time, creating a need for professional carpet cleaning care.

So to answer the original question, here are some general guidelines for you to go by:

  • Businesses: clean a minimum of  every 6 months in the high traffic areas and  every 12 months for all other carpeted areas.
  • Daycare Facilities and Schools: clean once a month. I know that may seem too often but babies and toddlers are very close to the ground, meaning they are consuming a good bit of the dirt, dust and allergens of what is in the carpet. This can be a serious health hazard with their developing immune systems.
  • House with two adults and kids: clean every 6 months for high traffic areas and  every 12 months for all other carpet.
  • House with smokers: clean every 4 to 6 months.
  • House with indoor pets: clean at least every 3 to 4 months.

Here’s a tip for you, be sure your janitorial company or housekeeping service is  vacuuming regularly.  This will help to ensure that any dirt or dust particles will remain near the surface of the carpet and will be easier to remove. Once dirt and dust have been allowed to settle into a carpet ‘s fiber it can be much more difficult to remove.

It’s a good idea to be on a regular carpet maintenance program and here are some reasons why:

  • Cleaning regularly will increase the lifespan.
  • Improves carpet’s filtering abilities to continue trapping more harmful particles.
  • Reduces the number of illnesses caught from allergens.
  • Most carpet warranties require a carpet maintenance program to stay under warranty.
  • Helps improve the health of those that are susceptible to asthma and other allergies.
