Properly training janitorial employees is very important and a top priority item for a commercial cleaning company. Keeping clients happy is essential and can only be accomplished if your cleaning staff is well trained.  Austin Professional Cleaning Services works hard on training their employees prior to starting a new job. We also do “refreshers” and retrain them every 6 months. Here are some steps that you can follow to properly train the janitors in your cleaning company.

Step 1: Introduction of Cleaning Company’s Expectations

The first step in training your janitorial employees is to explain to them the company’s philosophy and its high expectations for cleaning. Make sure to hand out a guide that explains all the steps on how each cleaning task is done. Make sure to provide them with a note-pad so they can take notes. It is important to emphasize and explain on why they should follow the cleaning procedures provided and not to do it the way they were informally trained at their previous cleaning jobs. Share to them that your commercial cleaning company has standards that all employees need to follow and understand. This will help you reduce the amount of service complaints you will get from your clients.

Step 2: Hands-On Cleaning Demonstrations

Show your employees how each cleaning task is done. You can do the job and show them how everything is done, or you can show them playing an instructional video of how it is done. Emphasize again why it is important to follow all the steps.  Share with your cleaning staff examples of what things can go wrong if the correct cleaning procedures are not followed.  Examples: Injuries, Not being Time Efficient, etc.

Step 3: Allow Your Housekeepers Show you How They Clean

Have your employees follow the steps. Watch how they do it and give them constructive feed backs. Let them know what they did wrong and have them re-do the cleaning using the proper method. It is also very important to give them kudos for the things they did correct.  Make sure your training environment allows them to feel comfortable to ask questions. If they do not ask any questions ask them question. Make sure they know the reason behind why things are done a certain way.

Step 4: Review with the Cleaning Staff the Training

It is recommended that you go over the training notes with your employees every day for the first week. After the first week, you can reduce the review time to once a week for the next 2-3 weeks. Encourage them to take good notes on their guide. Keep inspecting their cleaning jobs for 3 more weeks.

Making sure that your cleaning staff does a good job will help meet the company’s and client’s expectations.  This will help minimize the complaints of clients and will also help get more business referrals.  Follow these steps to help you train your janitorial cleaning crew.
